OVERVIEW
Assessment of student learning is a known expectation for student affairs practitioners. While people understand it is important, they do not always know the practical information of how best to engage or execute in the work. With increasing expectations in roles and competing priorities, it helps to know what elements are key to the work and have resources to consult as needed.

This content is especially relevant as assessment remains one of the top three areas of concern cited among institutional accreditors for the past 8 years. Within the cited elements of assessment concerns for institutions, insufficient evidence and culture of assessment for co-curricular and student affairs assessment is among the top. While data-informed continuous quality improvement should be priority for all student affairs practitioners, the accreditation landscape adds importance and urgency around this topic.

This session will provide overview context for what assessment of student learning is and what it should look like for student affairs. Practical information and important considerations are provided pertaining to learning outcomes, methods and measures, and reporting/acting on results. Resources will be provided and time allotted for Q&A with participants to help ensure folks have actionable takeaways to apply this information in their roles.

Dr. Joseph D. Levy serves as the Associate Vice Provost of Accreditation and Quality Improvement at Excelsior University. Joe earned a BA in English from Baldwin-Wallace College, an MS in Student Affairs in Higher Education from Colorado State University, and his Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership from National Louis University. Joe is a member of the Student Affairs Assessment Leaders (SAAL) Board of Directors as co-creator and manager for the Applying and Leading Assessment in Student Affairs open course, a member of the National Advisory Board for the Center for Leading Improvements in Higher Education at Indiana University, and an endorsed speaker for the National Institute of Learning Outcomes Assessment (NILOA).
