OVERVIEW
This webinar focuses on the impacts of undergraduate peer mentoring within and outside of the classroom. This session provides implications for practice across multiple institutional types, functional areas, and diverse student identities. An emphasis will be placed on out-of-class peer mentoring usage including embedding peer mentoring into residence life training, student organization and leadership programs, summer bridge and transition programs, and tutoring and learning centers. An opportunity for dialogue is built into this session allowing participants to exchange ideas and best practices for implementing or enhancing peer mentoring programs focusing on students’ holistic success.

Cecilia Contreras, Ed.D., earned her doctorate in Higher Education Leadership from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAMU-CC) and an M.Sc. from the University of Technology of Compiègne in France. She currently serves as the Associate Director of the New Mexico Alliance for Minority Participation (NM AMP) at New Mexico State University (NMSU). Prior to this role, she gained academic and research experience as an Adjunct Professor at TAMU-CC, a Visiting Scholar at the University of Houston, and a STEM education researcher at NMSU. Dr. Contreras specializes in qualitative and mixed-methods research, focusing on STEM student academic performance and persistence through targeted mentoring programs and institutional initiatives. Her comprehensive expertise includes undergraduate teaching, curriculum design, grant writing, program evaluation, and data analysis. Additionally, she is skilled in developing data-collection instruments, authoring research publications, and leading training sessions on inclusive learning pedagogies and effective mentoring.

Maryanne Long, PhD earned her doctorate in Higher Education Administration & Policy from the University of Florida after working in student affairs administrative roles at various institutions in the Northeast. She completed a Postdoctoral Researcher position at New Mexico State University where she developed a research agenda exploring High Impact Practices within STEM postsecondary education. She now serves as the Director of Postdoctoral Affairs & Strategic Initiatives for the Graduate School at the University of Texas – El Paso, where she has expanded her research. Dr. Long’s other degrees include a BS in Business Administration (SUNY Fredonia), MS in Student Personnel Administration (SUNY Buffalo State), and an MBA (Marist University).
