TITLE: The Future of Higher Education: Implications for Student Affairs
TIME: 1:00 – 2:00 pm EST
FACILITATOR: Dr. Aaron W. Hughey is a University Distinguished Professor in the Department of Counseling and Student Affairs at Western Kentucky University, where he oversees the graduate degree program in Student Affairs in Higher Education.
OVERVIEW:
As we are all acutely aware (or should be), the paradigm is changing rapidly in higher education, driven by several still-evolving realities. These include shifting demographics with significant implications for enrollments, the continued impact of social media, the revolutionary technological innovations surrounding AI, remote delivery of services, and a volatile political landscape that questions the inherent value of higher education as a societal asset. Add to the mix cultural considerations, the growing need for mental health services, vocational/occupational realities, and economic uncertainties and you have a perfect storm whose implications for the student affairs profession are only now beginning to be understood. Join us for a frank, transparent, and evidence-based interactive webinar experience in which we dissect where we currently are and where we are likely to be in 10-15 years.
OUTLINE:
- Where We Came From/Where We May Be Headed
- It’s the Economy, Stupid! (Or Is It?)
- Demographics: Saying the Quiet Part Out Loud
- Technology: A Blessing and a Curse
- Politics, Politics, and More Politics
- Cultural Norms and Cultural Upheaval
- The World of Work: Are We Still Relevant?
- The Bottom Line: What Does It All Mean for Student Affairs?
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
- Why the past won’t determine the future of student affairs.
- What we can blame on the economy (and what we can’t).
- How demographics can be, but don’t have to be, deterministic of our fate.
- What technology can/can’t do for/to the profession.
- Why everything now must take politics into consideration.
- How higher education went from a requirement to an elective.
- Why the definition of work matters to our viability.
- What all this means for student affairs professionals of the future.
